Hello, I am a senior in high school and am 18 years old. I found the Northeast Ohio Videogame Initiative website by chance and am ecstatic that people are developing a video game industry in Cleveland. I have a passion for the arts and have played many video games such as Devil May Cry 3, the Final Fantasy Series, 1080 Snowboarding, and etc. I hope to one day create my own indie game company and help to establish a stand-alone, AAA title releasing Cleveland Video Game Company. It would be great if a successful, independent game like Alien Hominid was made in Ohio.

I have a senior project coming up where I must find an expert in a field. I was hoping if anyone working in video games would allow me to shadow them or offer a phone number/email address to someone who would be willing to be my on-site sponsor. Senior Project begins on May 11 to May 27(2 weeks) and I have to make a presentation based on my experiences at the sponsor's field/company that I'm working for. I am not allowed to be paid and must work 25-30 hours a week during the Project schedule.
Thank you for your time and maybe we can help each other out!

My email is at puesdorocker@yahoo.com

I'm very glad to see that a collective such as this exists, especially with the way that the video game industry is booming today.

Many game developers, publishers, and expos have a face, and more importantly, a voice that goes with that face. Atari now has Phil Harrison, formerly of Sony, the big guy for Epic Games has been CliffyB (as the fans call him) Reggie Fils-Aime is a representative for Nintendo of America, and when gamers talk about video game related issues, such as DLC and certain design decisions, the "blame" falls on that voice, and it becomes (almost) expected that that individual would respond to the fans. I, personally, would love to have this job.

No company thus far has really achieved a good consumer contact, someone to answer the fans' burning questions, and I think that's because the business world isn't used to how the gaming world works. There aren't too many other industries where all-out fanboy wars erupt on a daily basis.

I feel that game design is much more accessible now than it has ever been in the past, and that it would be a great industry for Northeast Ohio to get a corner on.

But I have never heard of this video game initiative until I really started digging for something like it, and that's a shame. There is a lot of talent in northeast Ohio, but most of us kids think that we have to move to California or Florida to even get started.

I'd really like to understand the scope of this movement, as far as progress, what obstacles we're facing, and what we might be able to get the public to help with. I'll bookmark the site and keep track of it for awhile. My email address is "SquallLionheartK@yahoo.com" (this email forwards to my blackberry, that's why I use it) and I'd really like to play my part as an Ohioan in getting this ball rolling.

My Hocking Technical College just started its Game Design and Production program. We are learning an immense amount from programming to art. We even started a club and are in the process of creating our own game in flash. But, because we have such a new program our school hasn't set up an internship for us or even gave us options for it. We were told to just look around and see what we find. So I am posting this as a application for an internship in some type of design or game design field. If anyone needs interns or if you would like to hire a few of us we would immensely appreciate it. We fear that we are going to gain a great talent and then it get wasted so please if you have any ideas or information please comment or email me directly.

Hi Ron -

I have known a few people that have tried in the past to get startup capital for game design in our region, without success. The funding community in NE Ohio tends to be on the conservative side (to put it mildly). That is an issue that I have been trying to address with this initiative - to help investors see that game related businesses (whether entertainment, 'edutainment', or somewhere in between) can be a lucrative investment.

Having said that, I would very much like to meet with you to discuss what you are trying to do, and to see if there are ways that I can help you. Send me a message here with your contact info if interested.

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi Evan,

Sorry for the slow response here; things are in transition on the site, and many of the regular posters are busy putting together a new game development certificate/degree at Lorain Community College.

Needless to say, I whole-heartedly agree with what you've said - that is the main reason I started the Northeast Ohio Videogame Initiative! If you are available, I encourage you to attend the monthly Game Developer Meetup group, held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, and hosted by Scott Baker (usually at the Wine Bar on Market Street in Cleveland - details can be found at gamedev.meetup.com/69).

Specifically toward your plan to start a game design program at the library, I would love to chat with you about that more. If I don't see you at the next meeting, feel free to contact me at daniel@neogameinitiative.com.

Hello all

My name is Evan Galasso. I work at the Willoughby-Eastlake Public Libraries and am hoping to start up a program in our libraries for game design. For the game industry to really boom, we need our communities to realize that this is a very viable career opportunity. I recently enrolled at the Art Institute Online, but thats not the only way to learn how to create video games and harness creativity.

I look forward to getting some feed back and getting involved with the Initiative in any way possible.

Daniel - Yes, I am in the online curriculum and live here in Northeast Ohio. I love taking classes online because it all goes at my own pace and anything I need is just a phone call or email away. Watch the video/audio lectures whenever I wish versus traveling and fighting traffic to get into a class just to cram an hour of material. They also have guest speakers from around the game industry via PC on Macromedia Breeze or teleconference discussing their experiences and answering questions. The only downside to taking online classes is it can be a little expensive since you have to buy everything new and it can be lonely if you miss the nostalgia of traditional face to face classrooms.

That is great about trying to get a IGDA chapter off the ground. I used to live in Columbus for eight years and never knew they had a chapter or any local game developers.

Good idea :D

NEO Videogame Initiative had hosted a dev contest earlier this year. It went rather well but it could have used a lot more exposure. Also, funding turned up a little short and they were unfortunately not able to set up another contest. The original plan was to host a quarterly contest with different themes for each contest.

I would like to see the contests started up again. If you plan on attending the Cleveland GameDev Meetup on the 21st I am sure that everyone would be happy to throw in some ideas. I would definitely like to talk about it.

I was sitting around this week while I am on "vacation", trying to think how I could possible get more involved and make gaming more visible in North East Ohio. So my first thought and the one I came back to for helping setup and sponsor (and help find sponsors) for a regional game dev contest.

If we focused on something that was small mini-games I think it could be fun, even to the extent of having possibly a show.

The negative is I don't think I could do this by myself, since we also have some major projects going on here at Max Gaming. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help me get in contact with local schools etc... and also get the word out? I see the entrants being alot of college type persons, aspiring game devs locally etc...

If we had a plan I could get some sponsors to donate some type of prize for the top games, and could also possibly get some judges to come in and not just judge but give some possible feedback to the entrants.

post here or email me at awright@maxgaming.net if you have any thoughts.

Adrian -

Great news once again. As always, feel free to post any job openings you have here on the boards. You may also want to check out the Cleveland Institute of Art's FUTURE Center's website (future.cia.edu), since I believe they have a job posting area as well.

Although I won't be able to attend the Austin GDC, I'll watch for announcements on Gamasutra and the like for information about the alpha demo. I would also like to get your company linked, perhaps even get a game screenshot so we can get Max Gaming into the title banner rotation with the other games.

Cheers,

Adrian -

Knut is currently overseas for the summer, but I'll send you his email address. We do have a few other small studios in town (Flipline, Adams Immersive, Form Group, Giant Revolving Brain, to name a few) that also design casual and / or serious games, but at the time that we approached IGDA they implied that they were looking for larger studios, or at least studios that were specific to game design. Either way, I think we are in a much better position to approach them again.

Btw isn't there at least a couple of small game studios in the area? Flipline?? I thought I had seen in the site links a couple studios who were involved at some level in gaming.

Hi Terry and Adrian -

I had looked into starting an IGDA chapter here a year or two ago. At that time, they required at least one (local) game studio with a shipped title that would serve on an advisory board. Since I hadn't heard of Max Gaming at the time, we put in on the backburner. Perhaps it is time to start the process again.

I do know that Knut Hybnette at the Cleveland Institute of Art is helping to form a student chapter for CIA and CWRU students, but I don't know if membership is open to students at other colleges in the region as well.

Terry - are you taking the online courses at Westwood and living here in Northeast Ohio, or are you at one of the campuses out of state? Are you enjoying the classes?

Cleveland State University Career Services Center is proud to present "Exciting Careers in the 21st Century on Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th. This is an up-close, interactive engagement providing college motivated students; hence, high school, two and four year college students, with insight to 21st century careers through demonstrations and presentations of technology and innovations from Northeast Ohio companies.

This event would be even more exciting if we could arrange a Wii Competition for student attendees (roll out marketing among high school and college students). Thus, The Career Services Center would like to partner with a game development organization who could serve as a major event sponsor by arranging the competition and demonstrate to audience members the novelty of the Nintendo Wii.

I am not part of the crew for the website, I have actually talked to IGDA about starting a chapter, and have the forms. What I don't have currently are the number of organizations required to start a chapter. I am hoping through sites like this to start finding them.

Hi, my name is Terry Campbell from North Canton, Oh. Currently a Sophomore/Junior at Westwood College working towards a BA in Game Art & Design. So far my studies have covered traditional life & character/creature drawing, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Macromedia Flash, and in two weeks I begin 3D modeling using 3D Studio Max which I am excited to start. Lately I have been researching for internships and game testing positions to get any kind of experience in before I graduate.

I was happy to find a game developer organization in Northeast Ohio to help network with other developers in the area. I noticed on Dave Perry's Game Industry Map (http://www.gameindustrymap.com/home/) that Ohio was completely empty so I started plugging in some info from research I found in the area and on this site.

Also has the Northeast Ohio Videogame Initiative considered also becoming a Cleveland chapter for IDGA?

Thank you for having me! :)
